Is that right? The central band looks almost purple. (I'm a complete beginner with moths!).

Yes. In the south-east of England where I live it's very common & have seen a few over the last 3 weeks. I know nothing of the status of moths in Wales.
Apparently it is "listed under Section 7 of the Environment (Wales) Act, 2016". This covers "Biodiversity lists and duty to take steps to maintain and enhance biodiversity" So it seems to be used as a Biodiversity marker (although common).
