Guys
I spotted this beautiful little fly on Zennor Moor, W. Cornwall.
After trawling Google, I think it is a Syrphus spp. The nearest images suggested S. pyrastri, but I have doubts as it is described as large.

TIA

With the caveat that I'm not a hoverfly specialist and a species ID from me should be viewed with extreme caution, that looks like pied hoverfly, Scaeva pyrastri, or something closely related.

Thanks, guys
Scaeva selenitica does look good.
I've just been through my history to try and locate the page that gave me Syrphus pyrastri.
Duhh!!! I managed to conjoin 2 paragraphs on the BNHS Hoverfly page and come up with Syrphus pyrastri.
That'll teach me to READ the article, not attempt to speed-read it

You were right first time, this is Scaeva pyrastri not selenitica

Apologies to IamFof - didn't look at the image well enough! The clubbed shaped markings are dropped more at the edges in pyrastri (as in the pic) but not in selenitica. I don't have any pics of selenitica in my collection to illustrate!
