Great green macaws, Selva Verde (1 Viewer)

I've been told that Selva Verde offers a tour of about 4hrs total duration to an almendro tree where there is a chance of seeing Great Green Macaws. Has anyone taken this tour? Would you recommend it? I can't find any other information about it online, apart from a brief description on SVL's website.

If there's anywhere else in the Sarapiqui region that you'd recommend for potential Great Green Macaw sightings (or any particular guides) I'd be really grateful to hear about it!

I saw a pair of GGM at this site last year around dusk so they may use this lone tree as their roost. I was told that their nest tree has been purchased by someone to prevent it being logged along with the others trees at this site? Close to the biological centre if I recall.

Kevin Martinez (son of Alex Martinez, who operates the Andrea Cristina B&B and who has devoted much time and energy to the conservation of Great Green Macaws in the Sarapiqui region) is quite familiar with the birdlife of the area and he does offer guide services. Presumably the best way to reach him is through the B&B website (http://posadaandrea.wix.com/andreacristina), though I find him also listed in association with an organization called Global Family Adventures (http://globalfamilyadventures.com/guides/kevin-herra-martinez/).

I've invariably seen overhead (and occasionally foraging) macaws at Tirimbina Rainforest Center.

When I was there in March a pair were using large trees round the back of the SV property, accessed by a track that goes right from the main entrance and skirts SV. A side track goes off to the right before you get to the tourist accommodation entrance barrier. The macaw/parrot roost is then in the large trees a few hun dred metres down that track, on the left.

We saw macaws flying around the general area several times as well.

As others have indicated, staying at Selva Verde as well as elsewhere in the Sarapiqui area offers a fair chance at seeing Great Greens, even without doing the tour. Typically seen in flight. I usually hear or see them every time I bird or guide in the La Selva area. From May to November, they can also turn up in the foothills- such as at El Tapir and Quebrada Gonzalez. Interestingly enough, although they used to be the main macaw at Laguna del Lagarto, Scarlets may actually now be more regular there.

On another note, Great Greens might also be regular at the Nature Pavilion by next year. The owners have planted a couple of Beach Almonds and recently, macaws have swooped down to check them out on more than one occasion. If those trees start to produce seeds, it could end up being the best place to photograph Great Greens.

I just returned from Costa Rica. Great Green Macaws very easily seen at La Selva (around the cafeteria of the Biological Station), around our hotel (Hacienda Suena Azul) and from the road between Tigre and Puerto Viejo. As said above, always in flight but still some great views.
