We have quite a lot of wetlands around here, so grey herons are beautiful, but not uncommon. A favourite spot is on the roofs where presumably they can see potential prey, but also dodge the attentions of seagulls and crows ! Yesterday, what I took to be a young male perched on next door neighbour's gazebo roof. At the outset, I did a little research before feeding this heron, and ham seemed to be acceptable for them - in any case, as you can see he wolfed it down !!
So I coaxed him down from the roof and eventually, he overcame his fears and tucked into the ham I gave him. I have a few videos but too large for here, so here are a few pictures. He stayed about an hour in total in the garden before taking wing.
If I have broken any rules by posting this, or if I should not be feeding him, then I am happy to remove the post, otherwise I would like to share this rare, tender lovely moment with you.
