Grimley and Holt (2 Viewers)

A Turnstone spent most of the day at Camp Lane Pits and was showing well on the causeway this evening.

Mon 26th May.....

1200-1400 - Very quiet with the reported passage waders having very appropriately moved on:C

Oystercatcher - 4 noted on Wagon Wheel, 2 on Camp Lane and 3 on the other pit, hard to say how many birds are involved?

Redshank x2 Camp Lane.
LRP x2 WW.

Yellow Legged Gull - Adult in primary moult/replacement with ca30 LBB's WW.

7 spp of Warbler including a good scattering of Garden Warblers.

Highlight, for me anyway, were at least 5 possibly 6 Cuckoos seen. There were possibly others calling and includes 3 birds chasing each other over the far side reedbed.

Water levels, as expected, had risen.

No raptors, apart from Buzzards, either common or exotic seen but evidence below.....

cracking afternoon at camp lane pits. Lots of warm sunshine. Nothing too exciting on the bird front. here is a selected list: Graylag, Gadwall, Teal, little Egret, Grey Heron, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Buzzard, Common Tern, Green woodpecker, Reed Warbler, White Wagtail.

61 adult Gadwall were at Camp Lane Pits late afternoon in addition to 8 broods (2 + 3 + 7 + 8 + 8 + 11).

Also 7 moulting drake Mandarin at Wagon Wheel Lane Pits this evening is an early indication that we may be in for a bumper breeding season of this ever increasing species.

Is that 6 or 8 Gadwall broods Brian? How are the waders doing this year?

Well spotted Phil. Its been a long day!

Six broods.

Oystercatchers (4 pairs), Lapwings (7+ pairs), Redshanks (2 pairs) and LRP (2 pairs) all in residence.

The first two seem to be doing OK, the latter two difficult to be certain at this stage.

This afternoon was beautiful. I had a lot of fun watching the Terns and the dragonflies. The Gadwall numbers were impressive (I also tried counting Coots and struggled well over 100). Oystercatchers and lapwings were also present in good numbers.

Upton Warren and Belvide will be holding the regular Autumn All-Day Birdwatch on Saturday 6th September. Hopefully Middleton Lakes, Grimley, Sandwell Valley, Marsh Lane and Venus Pool can all also take part :t:

A 3 hour walk around camp lane pits this afternoon produced a total of 42 species.
including 5 Little Egrets, 4 Oystercatchers, 2LRP, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Common Sandpiper, a Redshank a good number of Lapwings, a Kestrel, a Kingfisher, 4 Herons.

Lots of butterflies around the north of Camp lane pits this afternoon. Several marbled whites and small skippers?

Unsurprisingly there was no sign of the Common Scoter present yesterday. None of the previous birds have stayed more than a day. An early juvenile Common Gull was at Wagon Wheel Lane Pits with the ever increasing flock of juvenile Lesser Black-backed Gulls, at least 40. Also noted today were the usual flock of Little Egrets, at least five at Camp Lane Pits and another at Holt, an adult Dunlin, Common Sandpiper, 3 Pochard and 2 Shovelers at CLP. A Clouded Yellow also flew through the north end at CLP, maybe the same one present a week ago.

However, the most remarkable event of the morning was the number of Redstarts present. Ten were located in hawthorns along the River Severn between Wagon Wheel Lane and Lock Lane comprising 7 adult males and 3 adult females. Another two, an adult male and adult female were at Church Farm Pools while at least three were at Holt. No doubt there were more in the area as I only concentrated on their usual haunts.

6 Little Egret at Camp Lane Pits this afternoon. Also of note was a single Common Sandpiper and a Peregrine that went through only to be mobbed by the Common Terns

9 Little Egrets were still at Camp Lane Pits this evening (it usually takes a complete circuit of the site to confirm the number present). Also an impressive number of Mandarin were at Wagon Wheel Lane Pits this evening, 30 in total and therefore a new record count for the patch.
