Have any birds been extinct in the last 100 years? (1 Viewer)

Dozens. Here's a quick and far from exhaustive list that also includes distinct sub-species, many of which have a claim on species status. I've seen straight away that recent extinctions like the Po'ouli aren't included. This book, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Extinct-Birds-Errol-Fuller/dp/0198508379, is one of the best, and most depressing I own.

Please tell me you didn't type all that!

Thanks a lot bitterntwisted for that list! Just wondering, though very unlikely, has anyone here seen any of those birds on that list in the past?

What a depressing list. Pink-headed Duck, I think that went extinct only a few years ago, I bet someone on BF saw that in its final years.

At least 3 of these are still going - Chinese Crested Tern, Heinroth's Shearwater and Beck's Petrel
Still depressing though

Pink-headed Duck has been gone for ages, any BF member who saw that must be pretty old by now:) There was some hope raised when there were purported sightings in Myanmar a couple of years ago, but nothing ever came out of it.

On a slightly more cheerful note, occasionally birds thought extinct are rediscovered. A good example is the Takahe which was rediscovered in the Fjordland mountains of New Zealand in 1948 and is now breeding successfully on predator-free off-shore islands, as well as in it's original location.

Rufous-Fronted Parakeet Bolborhynchus ferrugineifrons
Stresemann's Bristlefront Merulaxis stresemanni
Zapata Rail Cyanolimnas cerverai
Horqueta Crake Laterallus xenopterus
Helmeted Woodpecker Dryocopus galeatus
Brown-banded Antpitta Grallaria milleri
Moustached Antpitta Grallaria alleni
Society Island (=Polynesian) Ground Dove Gallicolumba erythroptera
All of these are extant, although finding Stresemann's Bristlefront may be nearly impossible, and the ground dove is down to a few birds (many of its populations have gone extinct)...

I must have been thinking of those claims in Myanmar. I remember a book I got for Christmas as a kid, about 1970, that had pictures of some endangered species in it, and Pink-Headed Duck was one of them. Was it already gone by then?
