I saw an unusual sight today a Sparrow Hawk tried to attack a Greater Spotted Woodpecker in my backgarden, the gsw quick,y escaped. What was unusual was tha the hawk chased it in flight for some considerable distance. Only thought they hunted in a dive/surge only ?

An other thread on the Goshawk in city mentioned that Sparrow Hawke hunt the parakeets climbing the trees :

Wow, that's cool you saw that! I'm no expert, but from what I've read, Sparrowhawks aren't just dive-and-grab hunters. They can actually chase birds for a bit if they really want that meal.

Hey!

I have seen a scenario like that as well. A Sparrow hawk chased a Greater spotted woodpecker, caught and tried to kill it. The Greater spotted woodpecker screamed like a stuck pig and both birds were fighting on the ground until the Sparrow hawk flew away with the struggling prey in its claws. Not sure if the Greater spotted woodpecker got away in the end, though.
