Hello. I’m a Backyard birder from WA state near Canada. (1 Viewer)

The reason I joined this forum is because all of my backyard house sparrows have completely disappeared from my area. They’re usually here all year round and have frequented my feeders (which I watch religiously) daily for the entire 5 years I’ve been living here. That is until a month ago. They just vanished suddenly overnight. No signs of illness. No bird corpses. No changes in the environment.
I was hoping to see if this sort of thing is happening anywhere else with any of you folks in Washington state or anywhere else?

Hi Cynthia, welcome to the forum on behalf of the staff and moderators. I think you will find us a friendly and helpful group. I’m down on the Oregon coast and haven’t head anything. You might try posting in the Washington State area of the forum, though I’m not sure how many people visit it:

Will do. Thank you Lisa :)

Hi Cynthia and a warm welcome from me too. As you will see, I live in Scotland about 3 years ago the same thing happened to me; I had a healthy population in the garden then at the end of one breeding season they all disappeared! They gradually worked their way back to my feeders last year.

No ideas at all LOL

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I hope to hear about all the birds you see when out and about.

Thank you for your thoughtful and helpful reply. It gives me hope that our feathered friends will come back. My husband and I were concerned that someone may’ve poisoned them or something. We’ve only seen a family of 4 return just this week. We were used to seeing about 100 sparrows around our block’s bushes and trees. Our backyard birdies have been spiritually medicinal for us, so it was a bit jarring to see them vanish without a clue.
