Hello, I am from San Diego CA (1 Viewer)

I joined this site because I love birds and I have an issue regarding habitat being threatened. I just don't know where to turn. In Crest (El Cajon) San Diego County, there is an approximately 10 acre Eucalyptus grove that is called South Lane Park. The county of San Diego is going to be cutting 300 trees from this park. I am very alarmed about this, not only is this a beautiful place to walk through but Hawks use these tall trees to build their nests every year. A few years ago when I lived on the edge of this park I counted at least 3 red tail hawks nests there. Aren't these birds protected? What can be done, I am worried they will be cutting trees as early as next week. I have also seen Western Blue Jays, Western Blue Birds, Black Phebe's, Orioles, Many different finches, Mocking birds, and Large barn Owls using these woods as their home.

Hi Jennikai,

A warm welcome to BirdForum from all the Moderators and Admin. Glad to have you on board :t:

Hopefully one of our US members will have some suggestions of organisations you can get hep from. Sounds like a dreadful situation.

Hi Jenikai,

I haven't been home for years now, but before I left, I turned over a red shouldered hawk fledgling to a group called Raptor Rescue. I used the East county chapter. I think they may have a new name now, I don't know for sure. Try checking the internet for San Diego Raptor Rescue. If you only have a week, maybe they could help because they've been around awhile and may have clout and knowledge of who to contact. It sounds like not much time though. Good Luck, Peregrinator

Welcome

Welcome Jenn. I'm in Monterey Bay CA - Did they have public hearings re cutting down trees there? Call the local planning dept and find out if the proper procedures were followed.

Hi Jennikai,

Sounds like a typical san diego situation to me....>>SIGH<<

If I were you, I would give the SD natural history museum a call. They have good people there that care about local bird populations (e.g. the Bird Atlas team), as well as conservation more generally. They should be able to help, or at least point you in the right direction.

Let us know how you get on.
