help with birds in Forest Park, St. Louis MO (1 Viewer)

I saw several of these birds near a pond yesterday in Forest Park, St. Louis, MO. They had a black patch on their forehead, their beaks looked almost spatulate, their eyes were orangish and they looked "heron-like" when they flew.
