Took this picture on the south coast near Bognor last week, can anyone assist with an id please.

Most grebes in the Uk are smaller then coots, apart from the great crested and red necked grebe- the red necked grebe being extremely unusual in the summer months. The larger grebes also tend to have longer more fine bills, not thick and blunted like a coots.

He's from New Zealand- possible that he just wasn't aware of the American and common coot being different species.

Well Fulica Americana and Fulica Atra look very identical in their juvenile. So yes you are right it is almost certainly an Atra Juvenile.

I am aware of them being different species. I just didn't pay attention to the location , only the photo
