House Sparrows Arizona (1 Viewer)

Photgog

Rufous-Female
I donno... House Sparrows, doing things that we don't normally see... feeding like a normal wild bird. There were about 20 birds in this flock feeding in the grass, in an area where there were other sparrows feeding at picnic tables.

These males have eye bars that are not normally seen on House Sparrows in the general area... I post for information and for advise... with respect to other birders and ??? have they seen sparrows with these eye bars???

Definitely House Sparrows. I'll give you credit for being observant because few US Birders spend a lot of time looking at House Sparrows! Looking at my Collins guide I see that a closely related species, Spanish Sparrow, shows similar eyebrows, but my guides don't show them on HOSP.

Best,
Jim

That is a house sparrow...clearly. They do have that little streak above the eye although many times not pronounced as much as what your image shows. I believe there are a ton of sub-species of the house sparrow (20's?)...so minor variations will occur.

I like to keep track of my sub species as I feel that in many cases they are different. That adds to the spice of birding. Not too many books have sub species listed though so hard to do.
