I thought this question was going to be about how many you've seen compared to how many you've heard, with the common cuckoo being one that every UK nature lover listens out for each spring, but relatively few of us actually set eyes on! My rather sad little total is three individual birds in my whole life - the first as a small child when my grandad pointed it out to me, the second around 15 years ago, and the third just this past sunday!

I think I should write that I rarely see a bird species more often, cos within days of typing this out I was spending some quality time watching cuckoos calling and zooming around tree to tree and back and forth over a river, at a local spot for me. Been there dozens of times and only ever heard them, but this time plenty of sightings and some beautiful views of these very beautiful birds, chuffed!

That's a good contender for the most amazing picture ever posted to this forum :)

I don't think we have done THIS list before, or at least a lazy search didn't reveal any.

Anyway, how many members of the order Cuculiformes (Cuckoos, Coucals, Couas, Anis, and Roadrunners) have you seen?

My list is pretty modest (10 species), since a lot of my birding has been in areas with more limited diversity of cuckoos.

Smooth-billed Ani
Greater Ani
Groove-billed Ani
Greater Roadrunner
Striped Cuckoo
Little Cuckoo
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Black-billed Cuckoo
Mangrove Cuckoo
Squirrel Cuckoo (including future potential splits Choco and Middle American)

I've also heard Oriental and Common, but they are not on the "main" list until I see them.
I’m envious of your Squirrel Cuckoo! I was looking all over for one in the Yucatán, but as our guide said— it’s hard to go looking for cuckoos, they just kind of happen to you…

For me, a modest 7:
-Yellow-billed Cuckoo
-Black Billed Cuckoo
-Mangrove Cuckoo
-Great Spotted Cuckoo
-Greater Roadrunner
-Groove-billed Ani
-Common Cuckoo
