This well-marked form is named for the able young naturalist Russell W. Hendee, whose death of tropical fever was a sad blow to his fellow members of the expedition.

Russell W. Hendee (1899–1929) was an American zoologist. He was in Alaska (1921–1922), working for the Colorado Museum of Natural History. He was a member of the Godman-Thomas expedition to Peru (1925) collecting for the British Museum, and was in Indochina with Theodore Roosevelt (q.v.) (1929). Hendee had a tropical fever and went into a delirium, was hospitalised but committed suicide by throwing himself out of a window.
