Obs. The two specimens, now in the Tring Museum, were obtained by Mr. Gustav Schneider, after whom the species has been named.

Gustav Schneider (1867-1958) was a Swiss zoologist who collected in Sumatra (1897) for the museum in Basel. F. Werner wrote an article on 'Reptilien und Batrachier aus Sumatra gesammelt von Herrn Gustav Schneider im Jahre 1897/1898' (1900). There is some confusion as Gustav Schneider Snr. (1834-1900) had also been conservator at Basel (1859-1875), but given the timing of the description we are confident that the eponym is for the younger man. An amphibian is named after him.

Gustav Schneider (1867-1958) Swiss zoologist, collector in the East Indies 1888, 1897-1899 (Hydrornis).

So I think he died 1948 and not 1958. But feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Gustav Schneider (1867- 1948) was a Swiss taxidermist and for more than 16 years he was the Custodian of the Zoological Institute at the University of Basel. His passion for the art of taxidermy had been taught by his Father, Gustav Schneider Sr., a famous taxidermist, botanist and Merchant [5]. After 1875, dealing with objects of nature became one of his main occupations, probably because of financial problems. He managed to comprise numerous collections from different parts of Southeast Asia, like Singapore, Malaysia or Indonesia, and later on, from U.S.A. and the Bermuda Islands.

Well spotted Martin! (y)

This thread will definitely help me to write a better, and more correct, brief entry of the man behind the Rare, Sumatran endemic Schneider's Pitta [Pitta] Hydrornis schneideri, earlier a k a schneiderpitta, in Swedish [today it's blåryggig juveltrast – meaning Blue-backed Jewel-thrush)].

Thanks!

Björn
