I need help with a fedgeling. (1 Viewer)

Yesterday evening in the sunset I found a fedgeling on the ground right before the door of the house. It was unable to fly and didn't escape despite being close to it. There was no parent around when I looked. Because the sun was setting and the area is often patrolled by dogs, cats and sea snakes, I felt bad about it and decided to take the bird in and put it into a cage. I stay momentarily in a rural village surronded by nature.

When I grabbed it gently, it screamed, then calmed down after a moment when I petted it's head and back.

I put it into the cage and filled a little bowl with water from the kitchen. It wasn't distressed at all and was pecking into the bowl drinking it I assume.

I looked through the internet to identify it and it seems to be a black swallow, at first I thought it was a pied flycatcher.

I have never owned a bird or taken care of one before, I'm not a professional.

I read it fed on insects, so I dropped it dead flies into the cage, little mosquitos and an ant. Howewer, it didn't acknowkedge them or at most, pecking once and letting it drop again.

Since the day I found it, he has not eaten at all except drinking water briefly. My gut tells me something is not right and I'd like to avoid having it starve to death without me knowing.

I have been with him for hours on end, petting him and gently caressing, trying him to get to eat the flies. He allows me to touch him and doesn't mind my hand or me at all, even falling asleep in my palm when I brush his head and getting puffy.

I have no idea how to get him to eat or when he is starving. He looks fairly chubby, healthy with full feathers. He chirps once every few hours, is silent. Cleans himself and sometimes flapping wings in the cage.

I posted a pic of him.

Welcome to Birdforum.

Here are some guidelines you may find useful.

It certainly looks like a swallow. The best thing to do is contact a wildlife centre as it is best to find out what caused it to become grounded. Swallows can’t take off from the ground. You could try placing it on a branch near where you found it.

Im in the middle of nowhere rural russia, there's no such thing as a wildlife centre near me. If I dump it it will die. I have to take care of it and release it when it's ready, or try placing it on my hand from the balcony out in the heights.

I still havent found an answer to it not eating, and the time is running. I cant even feed it it doesnt acknowledge the dead flies I give it.

Hi 2x4x and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

Thank you for trying to care for this martin. You could try feeding small amounts of tinned cat food (not dog food) using a tweezer or similar. This worked for me many years ago with a Barn Swallow and I managed to get it back into the nest.

It is not correct that Martins and Swallows can't take off from the ground. They both do so quite easily after collecting mud from wet puddles for their nests. It's Swifts that can't take off from the ground as their wings are too long and their feet and legs don't allow them to get the right amount of lift.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.
