The bird flew over me unexpectedly. I hardly had time to take several photos.
Could it be possible to determine what bird it was?

Thank you,
Cristian

Thank you KGS. I had the same feeling, that it is a lapwing, when I saw the bird. But is it possible to have lapwings in my area (Brasov area) at this time of the year?

A week ago I was in Dobrogea county where I saw Pied Avocet, Moorhen, Corn Bunting (all are summer guest for Romania). A few days ago it was seen a Black Stork in Hungary. So...why not a Lapwing near Brasov?

Two of my birding fellows, from my town, are suggesting that the bird might be Vanellus gregarius or Vanellus leucurus. None of them should be in the area where I have photographed them and moreover not at this time of the year.
Could you please let me have your opinion too?
I add the other two photos I have taken while the bird was flying away from me.
Cristian

no cristian, it is a northern lapwing allright - wings are broad, they are white tipped (white tip lacking in the 2 steppe species); brownish rear end is due to orangey undertail coverts.
i've seen lapwing in december in transilvania, so this isn't too far fetched.

Sorry I may have lived in Qatar too long and the sun is getting to my head ----- why are these Lapwings ?????? On my monitor espcially on PIC 1 I can see a grey bird with long wings and black primaries i can even see a long tail IMHO male Hen Harrier NOT Lapwing.Even iits wings are beng held in a shallow V !!!!

That was my brief first thought (but I am obsessed with harriers!). I think a closer look at the 2nd image should convince: wings short and broad relative to tubby body, dark right across the depth of the wing not just some primaries, and angled perfectly for lapwing.

Thanks for the clarificaton Brian ----- will have another closer look----- the great thing about birding is that you learn new info every day, from other birders. Regards Jack.
