Has anyone been to this area lately? Gerard Gorman in his Birding in Eastern Europe describes it as some of the best birding he's ever had. I'm thinking of putting together a birding road trip in Romania next spring and wonder whether to include it or just go the whole hog and do the Danube delta.

The Danube delta is incredible. There were a few species we only got by boat and not sure how easy that would to be to do independently.

There are some coastal sites you could do onland but only saw Dalmatian pelican, Pallas gull little bittern and Pygmy cormorant from the boats. PC was common enough and you probably could get it inland somewhere using ebird.

Amazing numbers of terns once you get out on the water too

Romania generally has a lot of great birds and great infrastructure really enjoyed it there.

The Romanian guides for us were ibis They do one and four day boat trips. That was via naturetrek but I know one of the former bosses of oriole and he used the same guys

I've visited Istria in early May for the last two years and it is an excellent birding site. You should definitely include it in your itinerary.
