The city has announced that 81 stores and 550 jobs will go in the UK within the next 6 weeks.

Nailed by Warehouse express et al one assumes?

Our own fault for looking at the camera/lens in Jessops and then buying much cheaper on the internet.

On the one hand you could take the opinion that, as Jessops were a big fish going around gobbling up smaller independent stores, that's the way business goes and they deserve no sympathy (although the staff certainly do). On the other hand, if all the bricks and mortar shops go out of business, where are we going to try things before we buy them?:eek!:

Very true Sue
I assume they will keep the on-line business though

Big impact on the advertising income of Digital Photo and other mags if they dont.

It is a problem that these days to test a lens/camera out and then supporting that retailer costs about a 10% premium against buying online

You got in just before me Sue. Call me daft but I just paid £50 over the odds rather than make a web purchase and have decided that when I upgrade my scope I will buy it from the place where I try it out even though it will cost much more . In the Hi fi world, Sevenoaks Sound and Vision made the same point as you some time ago

There's still going to be 234 Jessops stores left. The coffin ain't shut just yet!

not really... if Jessops had the sense to price competitively this would not happen. My small independant local camera shop offers excellent service and competitive prices (often even better than WHE), if Jessops could offer this they would not be having problems. It's amazing that a company with the buying power of Jessops cannot do this.

Concur.

I'd like to have the option of buying on the high street as I prefer the convenience of having a shop at hand in case of faulted goods to......but at their prices?????

.........I think I'll save a packet by ordering online and take a chance if thats alright with everyone?

Nope.

I'll happily spend more locally, but my local Jessops has long been staffed by shaved monkeys with more interest in leaning on the counter and boasting to each other about how p*ssed they got last night, rather than in serving customers.

I applied for a job at Jessops here on the IW a couple of years ago. I heard nothing, then on the day of the job deadline I phoned the store to be told 'the vacancy's been filled'. Oh thanks a bunch you ignorant lot.
Since then I've not used Jessops and anyway much prefer to go to the local Isle of Wight-owned camera shop a little further up the road.

Having said that I feel sorry for those losing their jobs. It's happened to me in the past - more than once - and is pretty horrible.

I recently bought my Nikon D80 from jessops. It was £50 cheaper on their internet site but was still able to go and collect it from my nearest high street store to save postage. They even took it off the shelf in the shop when i got there. The staff seemed to be puzzled by the fact that they had been selling so many of these cameras from their website, rather than the store in the high street. I left them to work that one out for themselves!!

I think they were doomed with the arrival of the 'digital revolution'. What had previously been rather specialist products became yet another disposal consumer purchase which could be supplied by Argos, Currys and all the online suppliers.

Edit. On the radio this morning they said that some of Jessops' current problems were caused by them being unable to get stocks of the cheaper new DSLRs from Nikon and Canon. Are they in short supply?

Jessops

Personally I believe that internet only companies are the primary reason for this announcement today. I hear of high street shops specializing in optics, closing down week after week - they just do not have the buying power of Amazon et al. The single independent guy will continue to struggle..he has to sell the camera or lens at cost and hope to make a small profit on any accessory such as case or card.

I was working out how I could express more or less the same sentiment, but as you've done it better than I ever could I won't bother. I appreciate that with a new digital camera coming out every fifteen seconds it's hard to keep up, but at least make an effort...

Personally, I would feel very guilty if I went to a specialist supplier to try out cameras or optics and then, when I had decided what I wanted, purchased online. The trouble is it is so easy to compare prices on the internet and it is very tempting to buy something like a compact digital camera online for the cheapest price without even lhandling one and simply regard it as a disposal item.

Places like Jessops have also lost the useful sideline of items such as film and processing.

Firstly, I feel sorry for those members of staff who are about to lose their job.

Having said that I bought a Canon camera from them recently & the sales person didn't have a clue what she was talking about; "None of our compact cameras have the ability to attach a converter." So why do you sell lens adapters for your 'A' series range then?

I paid £60 more than I could have done if I'd bought online as they told me it was a Jessops exclusive deal for the Bank Holiday only for the Canon cashback offer. Not true. I decided that would be my last purchase from them. And what with the price of SD cards. You've got to be competitive in today's market and offer good service, I experienced neither.

If I'm honest my local Jessops is much better now (I bought my last 30D from them, even though I could've got it much cheaper online) because I do like the ability to take stuff back to real people in real places - good thing too, given that the 30D I bought had a knackered shutter!

They replaced it without a moment's hesitation too when I showed them the photographic evidence.

But there's a sense of "too little too late" about this.
