Mexico Birding Advice! (1 Viewer)

Hi all, I'm off next week for a month in Mexico on a trip with my partner. I'm from the UK and I have never been to the country before and would love some advice for seeing some wonderful New World species! I'll be starting in Mexico City before heading to Oaxaca, and then Puerto Escondido in the first week. Then I'll be spending the bulk of my trip around the more rural areas of Chiapas and Yucatan. If anyone has any experience of these areas I'd love some advice! It will not be a birding holiday, but i wont be going anywhere without my binos We will be trying to visit some of the best natural spectacles, and i will try and squeeze in a few special trips to see some specialist birding wonders!! We'd also love to climb a mountain and haven't decided which one yet, so if anyone has any experience please let me know I guess i'm after any advice of must-visit spots where i could see some really great nature, birds and otherwise. Any advice at all is appreciated!! Thanks all!!!

Quite a lot are great. Some suggestions would be as follows:

San Andres de la Cal (fairly near Mexico City - lovely area with some very good birds):

Various spots around Oaxaca City, including Monte Alban (major historical site as well as good for birds) and the forests at La Cumbre:

The La Venta area in the Isthmus (where I saw Rose-bellied Bunting, which is supressed on the following list):

In Yucutan, the birding is generally very easy and enjoyable almost everywhere. I very much recommend Cozumel, Xocen, Rio Lagartos and Camino Vigia Chico.

I just returned from Yucatan. If you have a car, Calakmul ruins are both spectacular and have lots of birds and birdlife. We seen a Great Curassow on the road, Tamandua in the ruins ec. Nearby Cueva de los Murcilegos is a good spectacle of bats and apparently regular Collared Forest-Falcon. Further north, Valladolid is an easy access to a very good rainforest birding near Xocen. Rio Lagartos has most of Yucatan endemics and nice tours to the mangroves for flamingos and more general birds.
