I've had friends assure me the above specimen is a Ladder-backed Woodpecker.

But how about the specimen here, below? Ladder-backed or Hairy Woodpecker?

John, the bottom one looks to be a Hairy Woodpecker.
The ones above match up well with a Google search for Ladder-backed.

Hairy and Downy Woodpecker are often easily distinguished by the smaller bill of Downies, but the last of these photos is a good reminder of how small the bill of a female Hairy Woodpecker can be.
