Lands End.Any good for birding in October? (1 Viewer)

I plan to stay in the Lands End area for a few days in Early October and wonder if it's any good for birding at this time.You very rarely see it mentioned on "Birdguides" so I am not sure if I will see anything.

Can you recommend any birding spots I should check out whilst I am there.Thanks.

I remember seeing a Rustic Bunting in the car park at Land's End in October, so I guess almost anything is possible. That area of Cornwall e.g. Sennen, St Just, Nanquidno is excellent for migrants, rarities and seawatching and October is probably the best month.

Even if Land's End itself does not produce the birds, any of the valleys with good cover along the south-west Cornish coast can and do produce some mind-blowing birds, plus plenty of commoner migrants, so don't think you can lose out. Scan Birdguides for similar dates last October for any of the sites Andrew mentions, or better still filter their last October reports to 'Cornwall' - should give you a good idea.

Lands End is the new hotspot in west Cornwall. Regular watching over the past few years has turned up some fantastic birds around the complex, the footpath up to Sennen, and around Swingates house (please do not enter!!!)

Off the top of my head I can think of Booted Warbler, Blyths Pipit, Bay-breasted Warbler, Western Bonelli's Warbler, American Bittern, Penduline Tit (found by me!) Dusky Warbler. Then there is there the regular stuff like Ortolan, Red-backed Shrike, Rose-coloured Starling, Subalpine Warbler, Melodious Warbler, Wryneck, Yellow-browed Warbler. I've missed loads out, but you get the gist

One small point about Lands End in October is that you don't have to pay to enter the Lands End complex as you can park in the road by the last house on the left-but check the sign first to be sure. Roger
