Large Tortoiseshell (1 Viewer)

BBC News - 'Extinct' butterfly now breeding in Kent

Presumably a deliberate release, rather than migration...
Evening.

The scattered sightings of Large Tortoiseshells around Kent surely makes the theory of deliberate releases harder to explain. They may well be genuine migrants re-establishing.

Due to all the releases at Huchinson Bank every migrant butterfly will be treated with suspicion.

Regards

Not just Kent either: in recent years, at least temporary colonies have formed on the Isle of Wight and Portland. Where is Huchinson Bank? Worth remembering the appalling practice of butterfly releases at weddings as well, clearly illegal whenever non-native species are involved. I'm certain the Scarce Swallowtail I saw in Hampshire originated with such a bunch of idiots.

Hutchinson's Bank (& adjacent Chapel Bank) are London Wildlife Trust reserves by New Addington, Croydon. Glanvilles have been present for many years & seemingly thriving. Dukes have been at CB for a few years but in recent years there have been Marsh Fritillaries, Black-veined White & Large Tortoiseshells amongst others. LWT do not approve of any illegal releases.

Thank you Aeshna 5 for the reply.
