Leica Trinovid 8x20 BCA (1 Viewer)

I’ve just purchased these and I’m quite smitten how sharp and bright they are for a 20mm aperture. Eye placement isn’t an issue, in fact I found these even easier to use than the outgoing Zeiss Terra 8x25 I had, sharper and brighter in good daytime conditions as well.

The one thing I noticed now was the inclusion of the AquaDura coatings, I thought these were reserved for the Ultravid’s? A nice upgrade all the same and makes them an even more attractive proposition to the aforementioned Ultravid.

A further update on my previous post.

Despite me believing the Trinovid 8x20BCA now came with the AquaDura coatings ( as per various online stores including Leica ) Leica have confirmed today that none of the Trinovid Pocket Binoculars come with the aforementioned coatings, they do however have the HLS coatings.

A very confusing picture for would be buyers though not the end of the word by any means as I’m still more than happy with my purchase.

Aqua Dura is a hydrophobic coating on the external surfaces of lenses to repel water and dirt, introduced in 2007.
HLS coatings are dielectric phase correction coatings on the Schmidt-Péchan prisms, introduced in 2002.

So your knowledgeable Leica folks have told you about apples when you asked about oranges.

I knew the AquaDura were hydrophobic coatings, wasn’t sure when the HLS coatings were first introduced. Leica appear rather poor at getting their own specification sheets in order on their website.

As it stands they’re guilty of mis-selling a product down to shoddy fact checking their own spec sheets. Of course that’s a bit dramatic, but you get the picture. The uninformed amongst us expect companies selling their products, at least to know what coatings are and aren’t applied.

Anyway I’m still enjoying them, and the 20mm aperture is a little gem to have in your pocket when out and about.
