'Malta - Massacre on Migration' (2 Viewers)

LowellMills

Is this your Sanderling?
Chris Packham has independently of BBC et al. headed over to Malta to try and document and raise awareness of the spring hunting season which covers 'only' Turtle Dove and Quail but is visibly used by the island's 9000 hunters to kill what bird species they want.

Nightly video diary and all other info at EDIT www.chrispackham.co.uk , his official site, or search 'Malta - Massacre on Migration' on youtube for episodes 1 and 2.

Bump - IMHO we should all watch this and try to help

I will never visit malta and certain other countries until this stops and will do everything I can to "spread the word"

I agree. I won't go there either.

The two clips posted so far are well worth watching - though they are predictably depressing. If, as the first video suggests, the ordinary Maltese people are against the hunters then that is encouraging, but it still won't persuade me to visit the place until the attitude of the hunters changes. You only have to read the comments to the videos to see how myopic the hunters themselves are, throwing their toys out of their prams before the series has even got properly started. It's only two or three of them so far, but what a pathetic image they project.

Chris and his team are just what we needed, a high profile professional group who can let the world know what's going on in a so-called civilised society in Europe. The results are sickening to decent people who had no idea about what's happening there.

I think it does need high profile people like Chris Packham to highlight this as ordinary birders and people who generally care about the birds are too easily ignored. However, it is heartening to see in the videos some local Maltese people are are against the hunting, but what proportion of the populace shares this opinion?

Yes i agree on what you have said I did belong to lipu who were based in italy and my membership entitled me to a monthly bulletin on the works and progress of lipu,s help in trying to secure a safer place for birdlife there and also to any wildlife
malta was often mentioned on the carnage of small birds and migrants like
honey buzzard and anything else the hunters could blast out of the sky
which they did all the time here and on the straits of messina and most of the
birds shot were just left to rot on the ground not even trophys it was quite
shocking but true to hear what was happening and still is anybody interveining
on their shooting patch or killing fields was soon looked down on, how do
you educate people who are arrogant, ignorant, and uneducated as these
hunters are they are quite happy to cause violence which they have done
In the past like setting fire to the wardens lodges and threatening with other ways and means, I hope chris packham delivers the message that will make people sit up and take notice for if anyone can he can.

Agree Chris and his team are whats needed . Its a disgrace that he's had to do this and puts to shame other higher profile NGO's and TV companies.

We need to give all the work for protection our support, including stamping out illegal raptor persecution in the UK.

Totally agree, we need this problem to be in the headlines each and every day and who better to highlight this barbaric behaviour than Chris Packham.

Damian.

Episodes 3 and 4 are now available and contain some distressingly graphic stuff. The power the hunters seem to have over the police is rather disturbing.

The other thing to emerge en passant from these videos is how spineless and ineffectual the European Union in Brussels is - if we didn't already know. What an expensive waste of space that is.

The only reason why I think he's not out and about is that some people are trying to silence him and stop him revealing this hunting.

I am sure that must be the case. We saw in an earlier video some hints that the police are the poodles of the hunters and there has been plenty of circumstantial evidence of that in the past too. The EU could, if they really wished, bring the country to heel with sanctions - the hunters are, after all, breaking EU law. But the civil servants of the European Commission are content to sit in their bunkers in Brussels, living very comfortably off our taxes while failing to do anything resembling an effectual job. And our MEPs aren't any better. The inertia of it all is utterly reprehensible.

Just watched episode 5 - words fail me, a public space and he's getting threatened. Malta better wake up to the fact that Chris has done more in 5 webcasts to goose their tourist trade than any number of petitions. I am splashing links to the videos everywhere, telling non-birders about the problem.
I hope that justice prevails and Chris walks free tonight.
