Malta massacre. (1 Viewer)

I've written to all Irish MEP's today in the hope that even one of them raises this issue.

I got a reply from one of them and apparently no questions are allowed to be raised with the European commission until after the European elections.:C

I've also written to the Maltese embassy raising the issue.

Regards Gerard.

Chris Packham and his team have my admiration, they're doing a fantastic job of bringing this to the publics attention, obviously birders have known for years, a hell on Earth for birds and decent people.

The Maltese have been advertising a lot for tourism recently, wouldn't it be good to persuade people to boycott this barbaric country.
The response of their spokesman on Radio 4 this morning was a farce. How can anyone shot roosting raptors during the night using torches and be considered even vaguely civilised.
As sickening as they are to look at photos of the destruction are probably the only way of winning people over.

I thought that the E.U already had laws in place to prevent this sickening massacre taking place. Malta may well be the worst offender but uncontrolled hunting is a problem throughout the Med and yet nothing in the way of sanctions ever seem to be enforced. Until the weight of public opinion within the countries responsible exceeds the influence exerted by the powerful hunting lobby the authorities will continue to turn a blind eye to the situation.

I've got a friend who is a Wildlife crime officer and he done some work in Cyprus, the videos he shot of birds glued to poles was heartbreaking, with Malta being in the E.U doesn't that mean they have to abide by E.U laws. I also met Chris Packham last year at my local reserve, very nice man, take my hat of to him for putting this issue in the public eye.

There are laws, yes. However the European Commission (with which I had remote dealings for many years) is completely broken, ineffectual and lacking in integrity. They are happy to meddle from a safe distance by issuing directives and occasionally rattling the odd sabre, but as for actually doing anything constructive, they are completely incompetent. They spew all sorts of statistic about the help they give member states and I know for a fact that it is complete bollocks. Most of the money members states contribute is wasted. Profligately. It could be spent on addressing ills like the hunting in Malta, but all the EU would do is give it to the Maltese government who would find ways of syphoning it away on window dressing without doing anything practical. I genuinely think that the UK would be better off outside the EU, but the trouble is that we would then have no leverage at all over Malta.

I'm not entirely sure that our government would exert any pressure on Malta. They appear to have yielded to our own, home grown hunting lobby on occasion if the ill conceived proposal regarding Buzzard control was anything to go by.

Hard to believe this is still going on. It was 2006 when we sailed into Turkey. I think I joined BirdLifeMalta soon after that. Even then, a group of international birders came during migration to protect the birds. There was an incident were someone was shot in the face, and a car was torched in a parking lot (car park). I haven't been a member of BirdLife Malta for years, but this reminds me that I need to sign up again. I have to say it seems futile though. This was going on before 2007 and it is now 2014. People talked of boycotting then. How many years has this been going on? Why? This is not hunting, by the way.

There have been food shortages in the past, but this is defo no longer the case. If the Maltese Goverment won't sort this, then is it possible to prosecute them under EU laws? the Goverment that is.

Just tried to renew, but the page wouldn't go to payment part--just kept coming back to fill out the form again.

In theory, yes, but it would have to be done by the European Commission and it would need immense and concerted pressure from several sides to persuade them to do anything more worrying than tell the Maltese they are very naughty boys. See post #11

I meant taking the Maltese Govt to court in a civil action for failing to protect wildlife protected under EU law. Probably be very, very expensive though

Time the Government took their George Cross back.

I would hope this is just an instant reaction comment. The hell that Malta endured is not negated by the actions of some, nor by the failures of the Maltese government and the EC.

Andy

From Bonnie Scotland where poisoning, trapping, feudalism and political chicanery continue to "encourage" wildlife.
