A Man has been accused of killing a protected bird - a peregrine falcon - on an estate in Aberdeenshire.

Alexander Cowe, 34, is said to have poisoned the bird at Clova Estate, at Lumsden, near Huntly, sometime between January 1, 2006 and June 21, 2006.

Cowe, of Rosario, Lumsden, Huntly, is also accused of having a bottle of poison at his home address and at Tomatin Estate between January 1, 1995, and November 2, 2006.

Cowe is further accused of having a pesticide in his possession at his home address and elsewhere, between March 14, 2005 and November 2, 2006.

This pesticide contained carbofuran, which can be used to poison birds of prey, it is alleged. The case was continued without plea at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday until April 12.

This is sadly becoming a more common issue in the North East of Scotland.I hope the Judge is reminded of the poisoned Golden Eagle found dead on Deeside last year also.Sadly, this IS a problem up here.It is time for the Courts to punish these people with maximum sentences....but I doubt it will happen. :-C

I have to agree that it's unlikely the punishment will fit the crime. Perhaps we should lobby the judge?

Unfortunately, whether or not the accused in this case acted on his own initaitive or under the instruction of his employer is unlikely ever to be known.

Sadly the fact that the large reward for information on the poisoning of the golden eagles in Scotland last year remains unclaimed speaks volumes about persecuton of raptors.
