Carman – October
The winter birds who were absent for most of the summer seem to be returning.
Haven’t seen any hawks for a few weeks now.
Most of the trees are now bare.
Already looking forward to the migration next spring.
Have found several more areas that we are going to check out in the spring. The furthest of the areas is about a 3 1/2 hour drive. Four of the areas are fairly close together in South Western Manitoba, Whitewater Lake, Douglas Marsh, Melita/Pierson Area and Turtle Mountain Provincial Park.
Watched a White Breasted Nuthatch hang upside down from our eaves trying to stuff a seed in a crack. It wouldn’t fit and it finally stuffed the seed behind the eaves troughing.
Sightings:
Robin
Brewer’s Blackbird
Blue Jay
Crow
Chickadee
White Breasted Nuthatch
House Sparrow
Hairy Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Dark Eyed Junco
Canada Geese
Stephenfield – October
A pleasant outing, no water fowl other than a pair of Greater Yellowlegs.
No sea gulls or terns.
At one point we stopped to look at some birds and to our amazement a fawn rose from the shallow ditch about 10 feet in front of us. We think it was napping. It trotted off into the bush and was joined by its mother. We got some nice pictures of the deer and never did get a look at the birds we were curious about.
Sightings:
Crow
Blue Jay
Dark Eyed Junco
Greater Yellow Legs
Chickadee
Fort Whyte Center – October
Shortly after arriving at Fort Whyte we came across a Magpie. This Magpie certainly wasn’t shy and we were able to get pretty close to it. All other Magpies we’ve come across fly off when we got within a few hundred yards.
We are pretty certain we saw a Hutton’s Vireo, picture attached.
Sightings:
Hutton’s Vireo
Northern Shoveller
Dark Eyed Junco
Magpie
Yellow Rumped Warbler
Pelican
Canada Geese
American Coot
Greater Yellowlegs
Mallard
Western Grebe
California Gull
Wood Duck
