A couple of shots of the Brindled Beauty from earlier this morning. It was a male and the first shot shows the antennae quite nicely.

Last Friday at Botley Wood, Hampshire 235 moths of 30 species. Highlights as follows:

Water Carpet x 2
Tawny-barred Angle
Early Thorn
Engrailed
Dotted Chestnut
Blossom Underwing
Red Chestnut x 3.

Work starts are too early for me to put the trap out this week, but I did get a White-Shouldered House Moth in the bathroom last night so I'm not completely missing out

NFY Brindled Pug in the trap this morning. Otherwise 5 Common Quaker, 2 Depressaria daucella, a Clouded Drab and an Early Grey.

The only moth I've had this year with one on the 8th Jan, although did have a Small Tortoiseshell butterfly in the attic yesterday which I let fly out.

Well...it was the old "El Blankety Blank" for me last night and nothing on the fence panels too, so a Common Quaker and a Hebrew Character from last time out.

I spoke too soon...at about 3pm this afternoon I found a NFG Twin-spotted Quaker, it was hiding in the leaves by one of the Hedgehog boxes.

Must try harder when searching the garden for stragglers.

NFY Orange Underwing flew past my nose at Blackbushe Airport this afternoon where I was photographing light aircraft (and an incidental male Pied Wagtail in immaculate evening dress).

A friend in Oakham, Rutland photographed a Hummingbird Hawkmoth in his garden today. Anyone know if it will be a very early immigrant, one that has wintered, or what?

Five moths in and around the trap this morning: one each of Early Grey, Brindled Beauty, Clouded Drab, Double-striped Pug and on the outside a NFY Common Plume. There might have been more if I hadn't forgotten to put the perspex covers on - aaargh!

Now correctly labelled Clouded Drab. Didn't see it earlier labelled differently, but from Ken's remark he's corrected it.

Having cocked up the last trapping session by leaving the covers off, I tried again last night with a good deal of optimism! Marion's sarcastic comment "you got more with the covers off" sums it up.... just two Hebrew Characters.
