A Valley Birder
Spent the afternoon looking for 3 short-eared owls spotted recently on open moorland between Tredegar and Rumney in the South Wales Valleys. However, we were surprised when a male merlin flew out of the grass and perched 100m away on a post before disappearing over a ridge. Nice.
We left at 4.30pm without seeing the SEO. Annoying though, because a post on the Gwent Ornoth. Soc. site said that they arrived at 4.30pm in the same and hunted until 5.30pm, 100m-200m away to the south. It makes you sick, doesn't it. The merlin makes up for it though.
