Mirandolle's (Forest) Falcon (1 Viewer)

Björn Bergenholtz

Here's a quick look at the dedicatee behind the Scientific name ...

mirandollei as in:
• the Slaty-backed Forest Falcon Micrastur mirandollei SCHLEGEL 1862 (here, and here), as "Astur Mirandollei":
1. Adulte, Surinam, présenté par Mr. Mirandolle: ...
... thus, a k a Mirandolle's Forest-Falcon.

As well, note that the dedicatee also was mentioned in the same Work (even if as nothing but) "Mr. Mirandolle" on three other pages; here, here and here.

In today's Key we find the following explanation [my blue and bolds]:
mirandollei
Charles Jean François Mirandolle (1827-1884) Dutch lawyer and politician born in Suriname (cf. his father Charles François Mirandolle (1789-1841) Dutch jurist, President of the Court of Justice, Suriname 1815-1831) (Micrastur).

However ... in the (Spanish) Book Los Nombres de las Aves de Venezuela ... primera parte: No Passeriformes (2018*), by Verea et al., we find the following text, for Micrastur mirandollei:
... en honor al jurista neerlandés Charles François Mirandolle (17891841), presidente de la Corte Suprema de Justicia de Surinam (1815– 1831).
With the added Note:
Para Jobling (2011: 384) no es claro si el homenajeado se trata de Charles François Mirandolle (1789–1841) o su hijo, Charles Jean François Mirandolle (1827–1884), quien entregó al ornitólogo alemán Hermnan [sic – !?!] Schlegel el holotipo del Halcón de lomo pizarreño.

Anyone who knows why by Verea et al. favours the Father, alt. (vice cersa) why James tend towards the Son ... ?

Just curious ... (simply as I happened to notice the somewhat different claims).

Björn

According to:

Haverschmidt F. 1976. Biographische notities betreffende ornithologische verzamelaars in Suriname in het begin van de 19e eeuw : Mr. Charles François Mirandolle (1789-1841), Mr. Adriaan François Lammens (1767-1847). Zoologische Bijdragen, 20: 3-16.

...the type specimen was part of a collection of some 250-260 birds that was donated to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie te Leiden in Feb 1826 by Charles François Mirandolle (1789-1841).
