More Caspian Gulls (3 Viewers)

Evan Atkinson

Always finding a way to go off topic...
United Kingdom
I've had a very good season for Casps with at least 50 different individuals from late November to now. The most recent individuals include 3 that I found at Dungeness on the 22nd and numerous other birds in the NW Cambridge area. Most of my pics are digiscopes at the moment because it is difficult to get close to most of the birds for decent camera pics. Currently still learning how to ID adult Casp's but it's proving difficult and I have only seen one or two confirmed adults, the rest of the birds I have seen have been 1st and 2nd winters.

1st winter at Abberton Reservoir, Essex showing the classic greater covert pattern

Another 1st winter, this time at Waterbeach Barracks in NW Cambridgeshire

2nd winter at RSPB Dungeness, a lovely bird to pick out.

Another 1st winter, also one I found at Dungeness

A neat and tidy 1st winter at Cambridge Research Park

And a smart adult Yellow Legged Gull at Waterbeach Barracks on the evening of Saturday

Kind regards

Nice one Evan!

I like the photo of the 1st winter Caspian at the Cambridge Research Park.

The 2nd winter bird is also an interesting find, they're not usually reported at that age.

Also as I'm sure you already know for the adult birds, if you see it long call with wings outstrecthed then you've got a winner!

Cheers, yes that is the one place where you can definitely get some good pics of them but I forgot my camera unfortunately. I find that 3rd winters are definitely the age that I don't see a lot of, not sure why but they just don't seem as frequent as the other ages.
