In the latter, Roger indicates his preference for the 12x42 over the 8x42:
‘Between the 8x42 and the 12x42, I actually prefer the 12x model. Why? Because for once it comes with no downsides
– view and handling and eyepiece comfort are the same, but the 12x42s take you closer and have a slightly flatter and wider apparent field.’


So more food for thought

I knew I should have bought the NL12x42 instead of the NL 8x42! I just knew it. I wonder if I can still exchange mine. That is alright I have enough trouble holding the 8x steady that is the downside to the 12x and less DOF. Roger has never tested the Meopta Meostar HD 15x56, or he would know that it is as good as the Swarovski SLC 15x56 for a lot less money. Interesting that he picked the Leica Trinovid HD 10x42 as his best buy in a mid-priced binocular. They are not too popular on Bird Forum and I wasn't that impressed with them when I tried them. I think he likes the build quality but disregarded the average optics and 6.1 degree FOV.

I just could not think of just having a 12X42 glass as a stand alone, that is why the statement "If you want to own just one pair that gives wonderful views of everything, but is light and easy to carry these are what I’d recommend" just does not resonate to me.
At least he earlier in the review stated that if low light and astro are a priority then it is not worth the upgrade from the SV 12x50.
If not the 8X42 NL then the 10X42 NL, sorry the 12X42 is not for me, I will keep my 12x50s.

Hi Andy,

I too was somewhat surprised by Roger’s recommendation of the NL 12x42 for all-round use
And something that had been tickling away in the back of my mind surfaced today . . .

Earlier on when Roger reviewed the EL SV 12x50, he rated it as the highest power binocular suited for all-round use
However, when he later reviewed the EL SV 10x50, he decided that it was slightly better, due to the steadier and wider view

Since Roger doesn’t seem to have yet reviewed the NL 10x42, perhaps a similar reappraisal may occur?

p.s. And as I’m sure your aware, Erik Bakker on Cloudy Nights rates the NL 10x42 as somewhat superior to the 12x42

If I lived Cumbria near the lakes overlooking open vitas I would likely use 12X more than 10X in daily use, however in my case I do not, so 8X or 10X is most often used.

I feel your pain..

But why don't you test all 3 and see which one suits you best...
Don't be swayed by the opinions of others...

I'm actually doing a second review of the 10x to recheck my original findings about the glare and Absam ring I saw first time around..
