More suppression in Cornwall (1 Viewer)

In fact all this is a good advert for a reliable information service that knows a substantial part of the birding community countrywide and can nuance news, as in "a wholly unconfirmed report of a possible...."

To be fair, many of us took the p*ss out of the individual in question on here. Well, I say that, but was it banter?

But where would that banter be better? Scilly or Shetland?

Either way, a few hoaxes is a good way to get back at people, perhaps? Or am I being too generous towards him?

Cheers, Andy.

Finding us a corking rarity would have perhaps enhanced his reputation in a better direction....

Just goes to show what is going on...I'm sure LGRE would say he told us so...:-O In the Mids we have a few well known stringers but they are easy to manage as they actually claim their sightings so we know to ignore then. Unidentified hoaxers are a totally new ball game and with the joys of social media and instant updates it's going to only get worse...:-C

There are a couple of hoaxers I know of knocking around Staffordshire and the West Midlands who actually add the birds they don't see to their lists.

Can I just ask, has the Semi-P Plover or this Killdeer been submitted? Or has anyone seen photos of either of the birds?

Just to mention, I have been shown a shot of a very interesting "ringed plover" taken at the airfield in question...at the right time.... The observer took the photo 'cause it looked interesting, but was also watching the SemiP Sand. But on the pic on the camera screen I could not really offer any opinion other than it was a juv', had obvious pale feather fringes etc but it wasn't heard to call whilst they were there... no shot of the toes as far as I know;)

One such person, said he had been for the Veery on Muck on the 19th November. A mate of mine was there that day with 25 birders on the 2 chartered boats. He knows this bloke well, and categorically said he was not one of the 25 there present. Why do they do it?

I think that's not really hoaxing (i.e. trying to get people to go to see something that isn't there) but out-and-out stringing.

And stringing, as we all agree, is an offence that requires the services of a judge, jury and executioner.

Surely stringing is mis-ID'ing a bird that you have seen whereas this is lying about having seen a bird when you actually haven't. Not sure whether there's a slang word for this. Suggestions anyone?

I guess stringing can even include correctly ID'ing a bird but on the basis of an insufficient observation (a UTV / untickable view)...

Ticking a bird while you weren't there at all – oh I am sure people will have a suggestion for that too!

Despite these folk tales, I will try to pacify swiftly by stating that I believe it has now been established he really was there in time.

That could be an honest mistake, we have all made those. Stringing is claiming a bird you have not seen well enough to make a 100% ID on.

Just come accross this thread(havent been on the forum for a week or so)and there seems there's been even more hoaxes than i realised i was aware of a few of them but not all of those. He even phoned me up more than once about the
surfbirds Rubythroat, what a t*** he must have been p*** ing himself at those of us who fell for it all.
Just to reiterate what Andrew( Forghornkinghorn) has said neither me or him had anything to do with any of this we were both just unfortuneate enough to be taken in by it.
