Moth Catches in 2007 (1 Viewer)

I have so enjoyed my first year using a moth trap, a Heath rigid portable 8 watt actinic. It’s not surprising that most species I’ve caught were new for me - so exciting!
Out of 107 species of macro moths caught I had 87 new ones. The 20 starred moths are species I’ve seen in previous years flying to outside (and inside) lights.

These are added species which I haven't seen in my garden in Guernsey this year, but I have seen in North Brittany in 2007 (no moth trap - outside light only).

It's the first time in years that I've not seen HBHM in my garden.

I know, I just copied the entries off my spreadsheet. I didn't have time to go through it. I think there are just over 300. It's not too bad considering that it felt like a fairly poor year (and I was away for most of August).
I've still not had December moth, so I'll not give up just yet!

Pretty impressive Ken,

As a matter of interest do you submit all your records to the County Recorder, and do you keep a photo record as well? Just idle curiosity.

regards,
Derek

Hi, Derek,
My CR only wants first sightings each year, so I only submit extra sightings in special circumstances - e.g. a rarity; an unusually late record; or if I've seen a species in the spring, I'll re-record it in the autumn.
As I'm a beginner, he prefers to see pictures (or specimens). I do keep all the photos so I have pix of virtually all the macro species I've recorded - though as others will hasten to tell you, they are of variable quality ;) . Many of the micros are just too difficult to photo.
I actually send all insect records to my CR as he keeps a huge database of Surrey records and is involved in all the insect atlas projects - as you may know, we are gradually publishing a whole series of books on everything from ladybirds to ants.
Just in case it's of interest I'll attach this year's records (so far) - at least, I've tried to attach them. I'd forgotten that it won't upload Excel sheets.
Ken

Oh, I don't know. They always seem of a fairly consistent quality to me 8-P

I doubt I'll get any more now. Perhaps Winter Moth but I've never recorded December Moth in December (latest 21 Nov) and haven't seen one at all for 3 years. In which case I'll finish on 298 species this year or thereabouts. Previous year totals:
2006 - 399
2005 - 355
2004 - 345

It really was a dire year.

A similar story here, whilst I recorded more species overall than Brian the drop 2006 to 2007 was almost the same:
2007 - 395
2006 - 500
2005 - 429
2004 - 373 (not all micros recorded)

What particularly concerns me is the complete absence from my list this year of 30+ species that I would normally regard as fairly common locally such as Timothy Tortrix, White Plume, Clouded Silver, Brown-spot Pinion and Fen Wainscot. Here's hoping they return next year!

Budapest records

Dear Friends

Hasn't been a moth in sight in these parts for a few weeks - we have light snow on the ground in the park over the road, though not in the streets much, and it has been below zero day and night since I came back from Bulgaria on 15th Dec - but not more than minus 5C here.

My records are attached, but not a full species list, just comparative numbers. This is all moths, macro & micro

YEAR//TOTAL // NEW TO BALCONY // NEW TO ME
2004// 56 // 56 out of 56 // 54
2005 //137 // 96 out of 123 // 49
2006//167 // 49 out of 113 // 83
2007//170 // 64 out of 147 // 71

(Sorry - this program doesn't seem to allow you to do a decent table, so I've edited it with slashes between the categories, which I hope you'll be able to understand)

So a better year for the balcony in terms of both new species identified and different species caught. I think this is just general confidence, after 3.5 years of it now, I know more of the basic species, and am able to work out what some of the more unusual ones are. Often, it must be said, with the help of you, Birdforum firends, for which I am eternally grateful.

So I hope you are all ready for an enjoyable festive season. I wish you all the well in the world, and look forward to continuing our dialogue in 2008.

Just so you know in advance (not that it will affect moth collection here), I have won an important contract to work in northern Argentina for most of January. I don't think I'll be doing much mothing, but I am certainly very excited about the birds....been swotting up like mad, and can't wait to get there. I was in Chile at the same latitude for 2 weeks in 1996 and managed some nice birds then, but not back to the region since....watch this space.

Very best wishes

David

I won't cry for you in Argentina, David. If I've learned nothing else this last year, I've finally begun to get your name right!
Hope you have a great trip; and see some gorgeous birds. (Are you taking a camera?)
There ought to be plenty of moths there in their summer.

You're right, Ken (about summer Argentinian moths)

But if I still have such problems with European species, I don't see how I'm going to cope with S. American ones, too!!! .......not to mention butterflies, dragonflies, lizards and all the rest........ But yes, I'll be taking my camera (can't do without it these days!!) and the laptop, for work purposes, of course, but also for instant picture downloads (!!) and so I hope to come back with a host of exciting things photographed.

Very best

David

Double-striped pug under the garage light last night (New Year's Eve)!

(the one and only moth I saw in December)

Happy New Year to all.

Nerine

Happy New Year to you, too, Nerine and other moth'ers!
I haven't had the trap out for the last few weeks due to a combination of weather, visitors, work and a bad back... but I may still add a few species to my year list when I hear back from my CR. Believe it or not, even though I had 8 pug sp. in all, I didn't have a single double-striped pug during 2007!

Hi, and happy new year dear friends. Here in Norway where I live there has been snow and 10 to 20 below zero for a long periode now- no conditions for using my moth trap since 20/10. Like for Nerine this was also my first year using a moth trap, and the fun of building my own traps, trying out different light sources and looking what was in the trap in the morning has been really amazing. I see the December moth season is discussed over here- for me here in mid Norway, 620 meters over sea level, I got my first December moth 12/9 and the last 17 ones 16/10. I am now getting prepared for a new season with modifying the traps and trying to figure out some portable solutions for trapping moths out in the fields. A small 12V UV-LED trap is under construction, maybe some here have experience with this kind of light too? My small portable generator will also be used for brighter light out in remote locations- I can hardly wait. I must say thank You to all of You that use this part of BirdForum, You are a great ressource- and its so interesting to see how You moth trappers in UK and other places enjoy this hobby too. Not to mention all the nice species You get in Your traps!

I wish You all a healthy and fun 2008- must it be rich of moths and nice weather too ;)

A brilliant start, Svein. Good luck for the coming year.
(I know it's just a typo but angel shades sounds just right for the time of year!)
Best wishes,
Ken

Hi Ken, and thanks a lot. I made a correction for the Angle shades now, also in my database where i have been typing wrong too- so many new names to deal with!

Thanks again
Svein

I think that those of you for whom English is not the first language do amazingly well! If this forum was in any other language most of us from the UK would be more than struggling, I think ;)
