Moths of April 2012 (1 Viewer)

Not the most exciting posting to start the thread but on Sunday I had a good view of an orange underwing species. It's the first time I've seen one stationary. It was about 4 feet above my head but even though I had binoculars I couldn't make out much detail on the antennae. I would count it as an orange underwing except for the fact that it was very close to a row of aspen. So there's at least a slight chance that it was a light OU. I must try again with a net if we get another warm spell.

I ran my trap again last night, hoping that the cloud might bring something out. I was wrong. 6 Hebrew Character, 1 Clouded Drab and 1 Small Quaker!

Well, Orange and Light Orange Underwing have already been mentioned but you'll need warm, sunny weather.

Adela cuprella is also on the wing in April. It's a fascinating longhorn micro-moth which flies at the top of Sallows and although the moth is small, you can see the antennae quite well through binoculars.

Good luck

Had a surprise yesterday in the form of an Agonopterix Ocellana which we flushed whilst clearing some gorse, a new species for me

Amongst the usual suspects from the trap last night - Muslin moth, nfy. 10 species altogether.

I guess the lack of traffic on this thread supports my results. From last night - 1 Hebrew Character. I think I'll save the electricity until May.

Turned on the light trap for the first time this season (finally some above freezing temperatures during nights over here) - all I got was 1 Hebrew Character and 1 Lithophane species that I have put down as Softly's Shoulder-Knot (L.consocia).

Like Andy, I haven't trapped at all for a few weeks - we must have had more rain here in that period than the previous 18 months put together! Today I did add a species to the garden list - a smart little male Adela cuprella sheltering on vegetation. It looks like the 6th county record.

I have been trying trapping in Norfolk for the past two nights (away on a two week wildlife break) and not a single moth to the trap. The only moth seen so far was a Least Black Arches resting on the side of our caravan.

I think i'll stick to watching the Barn and Short eared owls down the field until the weather improves!

Switched on light-trap two nights ago. At first weather was rather bad - windy and rather cold-ish, but later wind calmed down and it produced rather good results (at least for a beginner like me).

The star of the night was female Kentish Glory which is rather common over here but was a lifer for me! Actually most of the species that night were lifers :-O

Other stuff:

Small Chocolate-tip 1

Seraphim 1
Early Tooth-striped 2
Ringed Carpet 6
Square Spot 1
Engrailed 1
Grey Birch 1
Brindled Beauty >6
Shoulder Stripe 1 (Not very common over here)
Purple Thorn 3
Eupithecia lanceata 1

Clouded Drab >10
Hebrew Character 7
Chestnut 5
Dotted Chestnut 3
Pine Beauty 2
Red Chestnut 1
White-Marked 1

Zophodia grossulariella 1
