Mr. Buckley in some "Buckleyi Birds" … (1 Viewer)

Clarence Buckley

1832–?1885

BIRTH 30 MAY 1832 • Betul (Baitool), Madhya Pradesh, India
DEATH 1885 • Ecuador?

His Father was Frederick Buckley
Birth 1785 Polebrook, Northamptonshire, England
Marriage 16 Jan 1823 Calcutta, West Bengal, India
Residence 30 May 1850 London, London, England
Death 14 Jul 1853 Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India
Father William Smith Buckley (1746-1832)
Mother Mary Wilson (1746-1824)
Spouse Unknown Indian (Died 1841)

"Clarence: Death date and location unknown but earlier than 1886, when he no longer appears in the electoral register. see also The Field for 23 May 1885 - The Field, where he is described as the "late Mr C Buckley""

Attached Paddington and St Marylebone Electoral Resister for 1885.

I can not really see any evidence for his death in Ecuador or anywhere else exotic - he was clearly retired in England from 1882-1885 - living at the same address. I see no reason to think he didn't die in London - except there is no death record nor grave (that I can find).

Clarence Buckley has been a tricky customer. He was probably not a prominent member of society due to his mother's race (she was described as an East Indian (a term for a Eurasian)). He may even have been Catholic - his brother married in the Christchurch New Zealand Catholic Basilica before moving to Tasmania. What I can say is that by the 1880s his immediate family was not wealthy. Several of his brothers and his widow spent time in the workhouse. The last official record I can find is from 5 Feb 1883 where he was in debt to a loan shark (attached) for £50 (a princely sum back then)! The burial may be "hidden" in catholic records or he may have committed suicide (during this period such events were not talked of). Another possibility is he did a runner - a Clarence Buckley with no backstory "appears" in Sydney in 1884. Arabella Burton Buckley was in no way related.

Clarence Buckley has been a tricky customer. ... Another possibility is he did a runner - a Clarence Buckley with no backstory "appears" in Sydney in 1884. ...
In here Motoring. - Frsk Tires. - Observer (Adelaide, SA : 1905 - 1931) - 29 Nov 1919 is a
Clarence Buckley, Ball way terra oe. Goodwood, 6 J.A.P.
But as discussed earlier he was already called late 1919.
Paul, and Martin, I would be (very) surprised if the 'Australian' Clarence Buckley (from Sydney, alt. Adelaide) is/was/were "our guy", or possibly guys ... (certainly so re. the latter one, of 1919).

According to this piece, from 1881, Clarence Buckley did: "return to England last year" (i.e. at some point, in 1880), which I assume was after his second Expedition to Ecuador (mentioned here).

However, this far I haven't been able to pin-point the Death of "our" Clarence Buckley any closer than what's told in post #41 (i.e. pre-"23 May 1885"). As well see the following text, from The Athenæum, No.3005 (dated May 30, 1885) p.699:
... by Mr. H, Druce, on some new species of Lepidoptera-Heterocera, founded on specimens obtained by the late Mr. C. Buckley in Ecuador, to which were added descriptions of some recent acquisitions of the same group from various other localities.

[from here]

Also compare with the (very) similar text in the Zoologist Serie 3, Vol. 9, No.102 (from June 1885), on p.240:
Mr. Herbert Druce read a paper on some new species of Lepidoptera-Heterocera, founded on specimens obtained by the late Mr. C. Buckley in Ecuador, to which were added descriptions of some recent acquisitions of the same group from various other localities.

[from here]
Or, even if a couple of years later, the equally similar phrase, in the Zoologist Serie 3, Vol. 11, No.124 (from April 1887) where we're also told: "Mr. G. A. Boulenger read a paper descriptive of the fishes collected by the late Mr. Clarence Buckley in Ecuador." (here)

To me, it looks like he passed away (probably in London) in, or shortly before, the Spring of 1885.

But that's all I can find, at least this far ...

The search goes on!

I have been thinking about why Buckley would have borrowed £50 in 1883 and one possibility that comes to mind is that he was attempting to finance a new expedition. Given his success in South America, I would guess that this would have been to South America. The one sticking point would have been the War of the Pacific (1879–1883) which would have made access to some of his old stomping groups impossible (especially Bolivia and the upper Amazon). Perhaps he delayed his trip or perhaps he became a victim...
