Sunday Bird Walk, June 10 2018
The Sunday bird walk went Morrell Wildlife Sanctuary in Nanaimo. The morning was cloudy and cool. We spotted a flock of high flying Black Swifts from the parking lot. We heard and then spotted a Western Tanager close to the trail. A Hairy Woodpecker flew into a tall tree near the trail. We heard Pacific Wrens, Willow Flycatchers, Pacific-slope Flycatchers and Hammond’s Flycatchers during the walk. A Wilson’s Warbler was seen just off the trail.
Sixteen birders including visiting birders from Chilliwack and Ohio saw and heard the following thirty-six species:

Wednesday, June 06:
A Whimbrel and a Long-billed Curlew were seen at Piper’s Lagoon in Nanaimo.
A Western Bluebird was seen along Western Acres Road in Nanaimo.
Parksville/Qualicum Beach Tuesday Bird Walk, June 05, 2018:
The Tuesday bird walk went to Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park in Parksville. The morning was cloudy with winds off the Strait of Georgia. Ten Great Blue Herons were seen just off shore. During the walk four Pigeon Guillemots and six White-winged Scoters were seen further off shore. A Western Wood- Pewee was seen at the edge of the forest. A lone Caspian Tern was spotted heading up the Strait giving us great views. We watched a Brown Creeper with a Dragonfly in its bill go into a nest hole on a tree next to the trail.
Twenty-two birders, including two visiting birders from the United Kingdom saw and heard the following forty species:

A pair of Evening Grosbeaks continue to visit backyard feeders at the end of Douglas Avenue in Nanaimo.

The Tuesday Bird Walk on June12, 2018 will be going the Beaver Ponds in Nanoose Bay. Meet at the Parksville Community Park (near the Lions Club playground parking lot) in Parksville at 9:00 am. Turn from Northwest Bay Road onto Power-Point Road. Follow Powder Point Road to the four way stop where it becomes Fairwinds Drive. Go about one hundred yards past the four way stop to a parking area on the left hand side of the road. We will meet you there at about 9:25 a.m.
The Sunday Bird Walk on June 17, 2018 will be going to Legacy Marsh in upper Lantzville. Meet at the Bird Store at 9:00 a.m. or under the hydro lines on Normarel Drive at about 9:15 a.m.
