Nestbox - spotted flycatcher (1 Viewer)

Hello all,

Last summer I heard a spotted flycatcher in my neighbours garden several times. They agreed to let me hang up a nestbox for this species, who is not so frequent where I live, unfortunately...

My question is double:
  • is this useful? Does this bird returns to the same garden or region or is he/she not likely to get back this spring/summer?
  • what specific requirements or demands do I need to provide with this kind of nestbox?

Thanks!

Kind regards
Stijn

Hi, I have just come across your question while double checking the dimensions for a Spotted Flycatcher nestbox. SP's definitely use nestboxes and it's well worth putting one up. It's possible that they already nest in the area if you heard them several times, they can be very elusive.
Do an internet search for the dimensions but the key is that they prefer an open fronted design with a low threshold as they like to be able to look out while incubating or brooding. My other suggestion would be, if the property has plants growing up the wall, to put it on a house wall rather than in a tree as this provides more protection from predators. I am lucky enough to have Spotted Flycatchers returning to my garden every year and have done for 15+ years. They return at the end of May.
Hope this helps, here is a link to a couple of pictures of "my" Spotted Flycatchers... good luck!
Best wishes, Alan Dixon
