I’m a professional photographer or was. I shot for a NASCAR magazine some years ago with much success. I now stick to nature and things that don’t move very fast since I don’t move to fast these days.

I was handed down a set of Leitz 10x40B 948280 is the 6 digit number the serial number? Yeah I know nothing about these lol ok. made in Portugal. I have no problem saying I’m not a binocular guy (yet to be educated) but soon hope to know the in and outs just like I did my first Pentax film camera I saved and bought when I was 11 years old. Thanks for letting me join and look forward to learning all about the optics and if what I have are considered decent or now a paper weight. Thanks again.

Hello Bowser,

Welcome to the Forum!

If the binocular functions properly, is not fogged or suffers from fungus, you have a useful tool for bird watching. It my even be collectible as the the Leitz 10x40B is a very elegant binocular. You can contact Leica USA or Leica in Germany to find out the binocular's age.
Certainly, binocular optics have come a long way in the decades since it was made.

Happy bird watching,
Arthur Pinewood

Hello and a very warm welcome from all of us at the Bird Forum, i still have my old Honeywell Pentax i bought in around 1965, am sure today your cameries are light years ahead of our old cameras same with my old Canon A1 and i sure don't miss the film hassels.
Will be looking forward for your bird pictures

Hi Bowser and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. I'm so glad Arthur told you about your binoculars, as I couldn't LOL.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Thanks so much for your warm welcome. A few weeks ago here in Kentucky the moon was in its last quarter (I believe that’s the term) and bright. On a whim I looked at the moon with the Leitz binoculars I got earlier that day. I could not believe what I saw plain as day. Craters on the moon!!! Very sharp and crisp. WOW IM HOOKED!!!! I have the consumer grade Nikon 300MM zoom for my camera and don’t dare take it past 225MM because everything gets very soft past 225 and it comes nowhere close to what I see through the binoculars. When I shot professionally I had access to the multi thousand dollar lenses but long time ago. I shot everything on film back then of course. No auto focus. Just my trusty F4.
