I'm a casual (mostly) backyard birder and also an optics enthusiast. My wife and I love watching and listening to the birds that we've been feeding in our backyard for over 30 years. I'm recently retired, so I'm now able to get a bit more involved in the pastime. I worked in the industrial optics field (barcode scanning/machine vision R&D) for 44 years, so I have interest in optical devices. Birding is the perfect hobby in that it combines both interests.

I was thrilled yesterday when received the vintage Leitz 10x40 (non-B) binocular that I recently purchased on an online auction. It's in near perfect condition and performs beautifully. My wife doesn't understand why I get excited over such things. LOL

I can't wait to start using them, as they are so superior to all my other optics.

Also you need a good sound recorder to record the birds sounds.
That will make you more enjoy with birds.

I've been using the Merlin app from Cornell Lab of Ornithology for recording the birds I encounter. Love it!
