New Product for Birdfair 2023 (1 Viewer)

Nothing new binocular wise from Swarovski sadly - probably good for everyone's scrolling fingers! They did have kahles new thermal Scopes as Mike mentions - when I saw the orange and brown I'd hoped they'd brought some bins along but sadly no helia s in sight - probably would have taken a few Swarovski sales away if they had so sensible marketing I guess!

The new Kowa prominar 66 is there though, must be honest I didn't take the time to have a go with it - quite content with my monarch 82. No updates to the Genesis binocular line that was mooted a while back.

Nothing much new from Zeiss, sfl '30s an addition from last year obviously - had to try them against my Nikon e2 to see if I was missing much and realised I wasn't - good bin though although I'm not sure it's long enough to warrant the central focus wheel - it works well on the likes of the NL (even the still quite long NL 32), sf, sfl '40 etc as there's room for your hands down near the objectives for better stability, the sfl '30 doesn't quite have enough real estate before the objectives for that so the ultravid '32 actually handles better for me.

Any others of note? Hawk has a really good range of options, good to see the Marines in 7x50 for a good, narrow, bright, stable old school view and the 7x32 marine seemed decent too, as well as the edx range having a good view and seeming well put together - no quibble lifetime warranty too - the everlasting binocular!

Good day as usual with plenty to see and do for all the family. Bring wellies and take 4x4 if you have one though - not terrible but not flip flop weather like last year!

Apologies guys...

I heard that there would be a new product for Birdfair this year..... Sadly yesterday (after driving 160 miles and getting bloody soaked) I found this wasn't the case.. Unless the new product was a thermal imager from Swarovski's sister brand.
I did hear however that there might be a 15x50 NL so watch this space.. I imagine it will be well over 3 Grand though...

Cheers

I was told a few weeks ago that they released a new product in rifle scopes but nothing new in binos. It was hinted look for something new around the holidays before the new year.

Always fun to have a “wait and see” post, gets the ideas out. I thought the best binos were made from some super reinforced plastic composite… magnesium being very last year?!

Peter
I think the original Zeiss FL had some weird formula 1 polycarbonate material along with magnesium ....And Leica did a one off Titanium BCA....

Cheers

Hi Paul (post #165),

In terms of recent product announcements . . .

Back on the 15th June, Swarovski did announce an upgrade to part of the Z8 telescopic site line,
but it's not scheduled to be available until the 4th September.

So any announcement of a new binocular product/ line may have a similar lag,
with availability being from the last quarter of the year, at the very earliest.

Yes, but isn't a birding optic...
I always found interesting the zooming factors of the rifle scopes but noticed with the Z8 (8x zoom!!!), that there is aperture loss at lower mags. However, for those that never looked to a rifle scope details, the limiting factor for birding are the reduced FOVs/AFOVs: - for ex: the Z8i 2.3-18x56 P would be interesting if hadn't AFOV of 24º... The X and C scopes have 57-71º... Different tools for different uses!

Definitely different tools for different uses. For hunting a small FOV can be preferable.
