New Product Introduction Today From Swarovski ? (5 Viewers)

EL SV's are starting to flood the 2nd hand market at ever lower prices...maybe in a few months time even I can afford to pick up one?! :eek!: might better start making my mind up 8.5x42 or 8x32....

So far I've managed to test almost 400 pairs of binoculars. Most of my tests can be found on Optyczne.pl and Allbinos.com. My private collection features over 100 classic devices, some of them are, undoubtedly, excellent optical instruments produced by such renowned companies as Docter, Fujinon, Leica, Nikon, Steiner, Swarovski, or Zeiss. The number of binoculars that I've just handled and looked through hits close to one thousand now. In all my years of experience I've never seen an optical instrument better than the Swarovski NL Pure 12x42. I suppose I don't have to add anything more...

Have you seen as good? Almost as good?

Edmund

I mean is this really a surprise, though? If someone said a binocular that cost less than the NL Pure and came out before it was somehow better, Swarovski would be fighting a losing battle.
The question I want to know is HOW MUCH BETTER is the Pure NL than the EL SV, Noctivid, Victory SF, etc?
The 10x is incredibly interesting to me given its wide field and the potential for a stabilized image via the forehead rest, but is it interesting/better enough to force me to sell my SV EL and then add another $1000+ (just an estimate) to pick one up?
Time will only tell, I suppose.

Justin
Just wait till the NL 10x42 come out and try one yourself. Buy it from a seller with a good return policy and compare it with your EL 10x42 and if you don't think the improvements are worth it return it. That is the only way you will ever really make an honest evaluation and decide for yourself if the additional $1000.00 spent is worth it.

At these prices, I think Nikon could scale down the Wx, add center focus and make money.

Reading through Arek’s careful review of the NL (see post #791, linking to the review of the 12x42) . . .

One notable takeaway is the confirmation that - across the full field of view - the image seems to be at least as good as that of the EL SV

Many have remarked on the increased FOV: the 8x NL’s 159 m vs the 8.5x EL’s 133 m, and; the 10x NL’s 133 m vs the 10x EL’s 112 m

And using the like-to-like comparison of the 10x42’s:
- while the increase to the diameter of the FOV is nearly 19% (as we mostly use a binocular for terrestrial use)
- the increase to the total image area is 41% (most significant for astronomical use)

The optical accomplishment of a 41% larger area - with no loss of image quality - would be remarkable *

So it’ll be interesting to see direct comparative reviews of the 8x and 10x versions of the NL’s and their EL counterparts

* comparing the 8x NL to the 8.5x EL results in a 42.8% increase to the area

Thinking about my previous post, it does seem that a marketing opportunity was lost when announcing the NL
Slightly hyperbolic possibilities such as:

‘All the quality you expect from the EL Swarovision image - plus over 40% more area of view’

‘A decisive 40% gain in viewing area, in an even more ergonomic package’

John

Yes, nice to see the open bridge gone. (While ironically the top range SF and NV are stuck with it!)

When I eventually see an NL, it will present an interesting test. For the past three decades I've happily used a 30/32mm and 56/60mm. I never really got on with 40/42mm binos, and a recent flirtation with the Trinovid BR seemed to confirm that; FOV and close focus are often diminished, and any other performance improvement over 32mm fails to justify the size/weight. I wonder whether the NL view, however lovely, could change my mind about that balance. I rather hope not.

Which bins would be favored if the FOV was the same? Assuming all FOVs were cut to, say equivalent to the ELs - which pair would everyone prefer?

Zeiss SF
Swaro EL
NL Pure
Noctived

NL Pure. All the reviews are commenting on how sharp and clear the on-axis view is and how good the micro contrast is and the NL Pure will have sharper edges than the other three plus you have the ergonomic advantages of the molded optical tubes and the head rest for stabilization. There is a lot of other advantages with the NL Pure besides the much larger FOV like the little velveteen bag that is included with the head rest and then there is the scented soap. I mean you could go on and on.

I bet you've secretly pre-ordered one of each magnification

No, I just pre-ordered the 8x42. I like 8x42 the best. Best DOF, biggest FOV, most stable, bright in low light and enough magnification for just about everything. I did order the head rest also. I think it will help even with 8x.

Which one would be the most popular? I pre-ordered the 10x42. I am used to the 10x with the Zeiss I have now so I think I would miss that little bit extra oomph in magnification.

Ahhh but imagine the magnification of the 12x
And when you smell the soap, use that headrest, you'll be tempted...just picture your set of three, the pleasure of choosing each day

With one of each, you could create the ultimate birder's wall hanging Dennis!

You would get THREE bars of soap that way! You might have enough soap to take a bath with it. Just imagine soaking in that genuine Swarovski soap with the NL in hand looking at your toes! Who all has pre-ordered the NL as of today. I am curious how many could be in front of me in the queue. I love that little velveteen bag you get with the head rest and the little wrench for taking it off. That is beyond COOL!
