New Swarovski zoom (1 Viewer)

Does anyone know if the new Swarovski zoom (or other new eyepieces) will fit the old AT80mm scope? I've read conflicting accounts of this in reviews.

No first-hand experience but I have been told that it fits; however, there is no locking-pin locator on the older model scope, so the bayonet will need to be nice and tight, I should think. Maybe take your scope along to a dealer and try it out before you decide - or ask someone on your next visit to a hide, the Swaro+zoom is a common site these days.

Thanks Steve. I've never had any problems with my bayonet-fitting zoom in the past seven years, must be a good fit. Not really sure if the new zoom would be worth buying (without the new scope) but it would be interesting to have a look-thru on my old scope. It's sometimes difficult to say how much optical quality owes to the eyepiece and how much to the scope.

I have heard many say that the new scope is very similar to the old except in size, weight and ergonomics. I don't know anyone with the old/new combination but the new zoom really is a beauty - so far as zooms go. You might be better buying a 30x - now that is a good lens!

At Rutland Water reserve they have an old model Swaro 80ED for general use with the zoom and, quite honestly, I can't imagine the new zoom being worth the cost as the view through the old one is excellent. I guess the new zoom might have a slightly wider field of view.

I suppose if you bought it, it would reduce the initial cost of buying the new scope - as I expect you inevitably would eventually (and sooner rather than later as the itch to buy would be tough to resist!).

ATS eypiece

Hello
I recently purchased a brand new second-hand 20 SW ATS eyepiece from one of our members the zoom ATS 20x60 worked fine on my AT80 also but I decided to go for the fixed option, I still use my AT zoom eyepiece. I did have to buy a new eyepiece adaptor from LCE which fits like a glove...thanks to Trevor Codling. I met a member one day at Donna Nook who is using the Zoom 20x60 zoom ATS eyepiece on his AT80...so it does work even though Swarovski did not recommend this when I wrote to them. If you decide to purchase an adapter I would recommend you remove the eye cup because this will reduce the distance between the the two lenses, I asked LCE to make me a custom made eyepiece which needed to be 5mm shorter than the eyepiece they make for the ATS 20x60 zoom eyepiece.

Roy.

I spoke to a management person from Swarovski this morning and he confirmed that the new 20-60x Zoom eyepiece will work with the older AT80 scopes. He said the difference is that the older eyepieces came either with or without a locking mechanism on the eyepiece. The new eyepieces do not have a locking mechanism because the locking mechanism is now located on the scope itself.

So, you can use the new zoom eyepiece on the older scope, but it will not lock in place.
