Whats the best sort of weather to go Nightjar searching in. Would it be a waste of time to go if the conditions are wet and windy like today?

is it true they may be attracted to a white hankerchief being waved around ?o:)

Marcia,

A warm and still evening is definitely best - when lots of insects will be on the wing and sounds carry over long distances. There's unlikely to be much activity on a wet and windy night, and it would anyway be much harder to hear the birds.

A wave of a white hankie (or a soft clap - to immitate a wing clap) can give results. But it's probably better to avoid unnecessary disturbance if possible, particularly at sites which are frequented by lots of birders.
