Why do Pied Wagtails walk on ice? (1 Viewer)

I 've seen Pied Wagtails walking on ice on several occasions. Today four were walking on parts of a lake which were frozen. They looked like they were searching for food, but what sort of food would they find on a stretch of frozen ice? There were plenty of areas around the lake which weren't frozen so what would induce them to take to the frozen water?

Suspect prey items would be easier to see and predate…nowhere to hide.

Cheers
