Nikon ED50 Grippa Case altered for QR plate (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I love my tiny Nikon ED50 but I disliked the original soft case provided with the scope. The Nikon Grippa Case is great in principle (and dirt cheap - I paid € 8.90 at Amazon) but the fastening screw prevents the scope from tripod use. So I cut it away, sewed two loops instead and pulled through an elastic strap around the tripod mount that helds the case in place. Now I can attach a Benro PC-40 Arca-style quick release plate with anti-twist lip. For me, this solution is just perfect and maybe of interest for some of you.

Regards, Walther

Hi this looks great. Where did you cut the straps ie. how much material did you leave to make the loops. Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I didn't shorten the straps at all but unsewed their two halves, removed the stiff piece of cardboard that surrounded the screw and turned them back under the lining of the case. All in all, 30 minutes of needlework. BTW, I also added a black nylon strap to protect the upper part of the scope and to optimize the fit of the case.

Hey Forent, You Da Man! I just did the same, didn´t do quite as neat a job as yours, I left the two sides a bit too long so they don´t sit snug under the tripod plate, but hell I´m not doing it again. I even chose a brown hair-band of my daughter´s to match the colour of the grippa-case. Mrs. S. was well-impressed at my ingenuity, but my sense of honour compelled me to confess that it was actually your idea. And a great one, many thanks, now I can use my straight ED50 with the grippa-plus-monopod-or-shoulder-pod.B :)

I can't find Grippa cases on Amazon UK? Have you considered buying a few of them, modding them and selling at profit to lazy and unskilled people like me?

There was one on fleabay for a tenner yesterday. Buy it, and next time you go to the Bridges, let me know. I´ll bring a sewing kit and one of my daughter´s hairbands (do tell me what colour you´d prefer). You keep an eye out for a Leach´s, some Sab´s, maybe a definite LT skua this time, if we´re lucky a Wilson´s, and I´ll make the necessary modifications to your grippa-case. Then back to Tipp and see if you can spot a Pew-Jot.

It's a deal.

And a Merry Christmas to you and your kin, sir.

Well, I'm lazy and unskilled, too, but if I can manage it, everybody can - at least with a little bit of patience. And as my spare time is scarce I could not sell for competetive prices.
The cases are still cheap to get in Germany. See e.g. http://www.dnet24.de/product_info.php/info/p704391_Nikon-Handholding-Case-fuer-ED-50--.html or http://www.amazon.de/Nikon-Handhold...r_1_45?ie=UTF8&s=ce-de&qid=1262970591&sr=8-45
Dunno whether they ship abroad.

Best regards, Walther
