Nikon UR-E20 alternative available. (1 Viewer)

Just had a chat with SRB-Griturn, they are making an adapter as an alternative and improved version of the UR-E20. Its designed to get the lens closer to the eyepiece than the Nikon adapter. They will soon be listed on the website, but if your desperate give them a bell. Really good company to deal with, very knowledgeable and helpful.

They have also listed a P5000 / 5100 cable release that goes on the flash socket.

All the best

Jon

Brilliant - just after thinking why didn't someone do that - the flash bracket adapter - I bought their angled one - which is a pain to set up - then they come out with this and cheaper. I'll call 'em tomorrow and see if I can just get the bit that goes in the flash socket - the arm looks the same.

As for the UR-E20 depends what scope. Having got hold of one, the lens holder when extended appears less than 1 mm from the inside of the UR-E20 and its 28mm thread. Mine is on the Kowa 28mm and DA10 which screws on instead of the eyepiece cup on my 20-60. Total distance from glass of lens to eyepiece glass is maybe towards 1cm but half of that is the distance from front of P5100 lens glass to the actual front of the telescopic bit the lens is mounted in. You cant reduce that - but if the UR-E20 replacement is for a wider than 28mm adapter you could have the lens telescopic bit (and maybe glass) protrude through the adapter to get overall closeness of P5100 glass and eyepiece glass down to say 0.5 cm.

But with P5100 zoomed out I don't get any vignetting from 20 to 60 anyway - just less light. But that's with Kowa - anybody got other experience?

I try and get all my adapters cut down a few mms. I have 3 of different lengths for the Canon G6. I was just about to have a shortened version made for the P5100 so this will save me the trouble.
I just have to remember to switch on the camera before mounting on the scope and zoom the eyepiece to the range I want to use ( on P5100 that is 10.1 mm or 43 mm, which is the end of the Green Macro Zone ). Also you have to switch the battery saving mode off so that the camera doesn't keep switching off.
Don't worry if you forget as the lens are designed to retract and switch off the camera they bump into something. I've done it a hundred times with the 8400.
Neil.

Hi Jon, just had a chat with Terry at SRB-Griturn who told me about the UR-E20 alternative, i have just paid the earth for one!!! I am led to believe that a lot of people are looking for one, also he sent me the cable release that fits the flash holder. I fitted a small piece of silicone tubing on inner cable between nipple and camera button. Superb
A good, helpfull British company. ijak

Hi Neil, i am new to digiscoping so i have been reading your posts with interest. may i just say thank you for all the helpfull hints and advice you have given. ijak

Hopefully my bits will turn up tomorrow then I should be set to go. I already have the eyepiece adapter and cable release, just waiting for the UR-E20 alternative. Found that the angled compact cable release also works on my D70, and with a T-Mount adapter the camera - eyepiece coupler should work as well, but thats for another day.

For the D70 I am also going to modify an IR remote to work as a cable release, waiting for that to arrive from HKong.

MrF- can you post some pics of how it fits together - when you get. While I only paid £19 plus small postage for my UR-E20, if SRB-G's does shorten the distance by using a wider than 28mm, I could change the step ring to the DA10 on my Kowa. I would like more light!. Just checked again and the width of the P5100 lens barrel is c. 33mm so no way the barrel could go throught the Ur-E20 28mm threaded end or the Ur-E20 could be shortened. To work, the replacement would have to be the aforesaid wider than (probably) 33mm . . .

Neil, is that how your adapters work? Also please, am getting a bit confused, my lens is 7.5-26.3 mm focal length and when zoomed out, the barrel just about touches the 28mm thread end on the UR-E20. When at the wide end its about 2-3mm shorter - but then I get vignetting and of course lens to eyepiec gap is greater. I've tried to use macro focus but can't get it to go green when zoomed out. Is this likely to be solvable with this shorter adapter?

Ref the flash bracket cable release adapter, spoke with nice people at SRB-G and they are swapping out my angled for this one, no problems. We discussed the key advantages being easier to set up, one time, don't need near so much space or to take down and really the best for me, be able to change the battery or the card without having to remove the adapter!

Thanks - and Rgds, Mike

Heres the adapter in place, along with my first ever digiscope shots. The only reason my adapter is shiny is that I needed it ASAP for a trip to France. Very happy with the combo.
