Off to the North Yorkshire Moors the first week in November.
It won't be entirely birdwatching, as we'll likely do some other touristy things too, but really would appreciate some likely places in the Whitby area.
D
All a bit weather dependant on where can be good in Whitby.
If there are a few Pallas's/Yellow-browed turning up try Ness Point just north of Robin Hood's Bay - walk north along the disused railway line concentrating mainly on areas with cover left (normally around the caravan park at Hawsker).
For seawatching Ness Point also good, but it's a bit of a walk to the seawatch point.
For seaduck (inc Velvet Scoter) try off Abbey Plain near the Abbey - view from footpath heading to Saltwick Nab, just east of Whitby or watch from harbour.
White-winged gulls in the harbour are a thing of the past, also a tad early, but Purple Sands roost at high tide - walk out along the 'piers' and scan along the bases.
If Little Auks are on the move and you want an easy seawatch do so from Sandsend overlooking the bay. Not so good for general stuff nowadays, probably too distrubed, but also divers there and occasional duck flocks especially on a northbound movement.
If passerines are turning up try the old alum quarries at Sandsend concentrating on the quarries/areas that have vegetation left on them for sprites etc.
Any stubble worth a walk for Lapland Buntings which tend to be quite easy to come by around Whitby in the autumn.
Enjoy!
