I guess I should know this, but I'm mainly a bird person, though I'd like to expand my horizons. I would be thankfull of the correct ID of this little bugger. Sorry the shots are not too good.

So that's why I've never seen it before. So in birding terms, it's an immature grasshopper of some sort?

It looks like a nymph of the Pasture Grasshopper (Orphulella speciosa) in the final instar before adulthood.
